“Veil”

Location: Del Norte Coast Redwoods, California (2021)

Wild rhododendrons in bloom on the side of highway 101 in the Del Norte Coast Redwoods State Park.

Rhodies: pink and vibrant. They are the pearls of the redwoods. From late May to early June, give or take a couple weeks, you can see them.

2021 allowed for the rare opportunity to photograph the flowers along highway 101 without the constant wave of vehicles due to intermittent road closures that temporarily closed down the highway to allow CalTrans to work on clearing debris from a landslide that occurred weeks prior.

What this meant was that the wind generated from the passing of cars, trucks, and trailers, was now eliminated. Instead of the flowers dancing wildly, they held steadfast, their beauty ready for the camera.

All the photographs from this period have floral arrangement names: bouquet, spray, veil. Each name chosen based on the general shape and feel of each composition – the interaction between rhododendron and redwood.
