“Verdant Falls”

Location: Iao Valley State Park, Maui (2020)

A temporary waterfall forms in the mountains of Iao Valley State Park.

Where does the waterfall come from? What is its source?

The fog prevents your eyes from seeing the top, but the lush slopes denote the source:
Rain! Rain! Lots of rain!

During the night and well into the morning, the rain pounded the mountain top. The plants absorbed the never-ending droplets until even they could not drink anymore.

Then the water began to coalesce, guided by gravity, to the shallows of the mountain where they flowed together uninterrupted to the edge of a cliff that plunged them down to the base of the mountain.

There, they regathered. Their numbers were multiplied by others from nearby mountain tops to form a river that lead them to their final destination:

The Pacific Ocean.
