“Oasis”

Location: Capitol Reef National Park (2018)

Overlooking Capitol Reef National Park and the Fruita Campground during sunset from the Fremont River Trail Viewpoint.

In an area where water is as precious as gold, the Fruita Campground is like a desert oasis.
It was the beginning of October. Fall colors had yet to arrive, but the orchards surrounding the campground were ripe.
Orchards that had been planted two centuries earlier by Mormon pioneers.

I used a readily available fruit picker resting against an apple tree to pluck a dangling red apple. The apple was very crisp and made a nice “crunch” as I ate it while walking along the Fremont River Trail.
