“Mourning Grove”
Location: Jedediah Smith State Park, California (2018)
A grove of giant coastal redwoods on the Boy Scout Trail in Metcalf Grove.
The trees in this photograph are deceptively smaller on print than they are in real life. A visit to the redwoods is an opportunity to walk among giants.
Pictures, as they say, do not do a location justice, but art can evoke emotion.
Do you feel it?
The more I look at this image, the more I see what appears to be a memorial service for the downed redwood.
(It’s as if, gathered, are friends who have come to pay their respects and to say one final goodbye.)
Or maybe one of the trees, the smaller one partly hidden from the larger tree on the right is a grandchild and the downed tree is her grandmother. A hospice nurse is administering a concoction of drugs to ease the pain…
Whatever the scene is, I see a tree surrounded by others like it and I can’t help but feel an emotional connection*.
[*My grandmother at the time of this photograph was on a physical decline.]
