“Mountain Man”

Location: Grand Tetons National Park, Wyoming (2018)

Mt. Moran at Oxbow Bend in Grand Tetons National Park is unobstructed and ready to shine as sunrise approaches in September.

The air had a biting cold that required one to blow hot air into cupped hands and to jostle one’s body from side to side. There were many of us.

Peak fall foliage was around the corner, but some of us didn’t have the luxury of staying longer for that moment: this morning was our only time.

The cold only added, I told myself, to the ambience as ducks and waterfowl would come into and out of the scene while fog from the slowly meandering river would lazily drift across.

Fall foliage, noticeable in some areas, missing in others, was a colorful mosaic of green and yellow that reminded me of home: Oregon.

As the sky become more and more illuminated with the approaching sunrise, I could see the face of a weathered man on Mt. Moran.

Perhaps the face of a mountain man?
