“Kiwanda Sunset”

Location: Pacific City, Oregon (2019)

A cloud free horizon produces a spectacular sunset next to Haystack Rock at Pacific City, Oregon.

You can only see the sunset like this during the winter.

But it’s during the winter when storms rolling off the Pacific Ocean are frequent and relentless – giving Oregon the reputation of being rainy nine months of the year (P.S. It’s not as true as you might think!).

Conditions were calm and I waited for a wave to break and the spray to catch the light.

Photographed along the edge of the parking lot, there were many beachgoers.
• People walking joyfully over the cool sand with their shoes in hand.
• Beer enthusiasts socializing over a pint from beachside Pelican Brew Pub.
• Children chasing one another with youthful glee.
(There was even a beachcomber with a metal detector!)

Yes, this was an evening when time meant nothing but the passing of the sun.

This would be a rare treat when the sun would set, uninterrupted, to the left of Haystack Rock. Nobody at the beach wanted to miss the sunset.
