“Kiwanda Storm”

Location: Pacific City, Oregon (2019)

A sunbreak during a winter storm along the Oregon coast in Pacific City illuminates the crest of windswept waves in front of Haystack Rock.

As you notice, I have several photos from similar perspectives of Haystack Rock (Chief Kiwanda Rock) in my portfolio.

An unknowing homage to Monet’s Haystack (or Grainstack) series, in which the famous French Impressionist painted haystacks in a field during different times of the day and year, I have repeatedly come to photograph Haystack Rock during different times of the year – in particular, I find the early months of the year to be ideal.

During these times, the setting sun is near the rock from this perspective (with the arch clearly visible).

For this photograph, I had to be patient in my timing of the waves with a sunbreak. This waiting allowed me to observe my surroundings closely – my eye looking through the camera’s viewfinder as I watched the passage of time move with the violence of crashing waves.
