“Tree of Life”

Location: Steptoe Butte, Colfax, Washington (2021)

Late afternoon sun accentuates the rolling hills of the Palouse as seen from the southwestern face of Steptoe Butte.

The magic here is in when the sun approaches the horizon just before sunset. It’s when the shadows become long and the hilltops glow with golden light.

That warm light grazes the side of your face as you put your eye up to the viewfinder and focus in on the composition. The air is clean and fills the lungs with a sweet aroma of wildflowers and cut grass. Songbirds are chirping.

The passage of time is recorded in the lengthening of the shadows and the fading of the light. One tree, fed by a meandering ditch, seems to bask in the light, enjoying the moment before the earth becomes still again. This is the stuff of life.
