Summary:
The Mormon settlers who arrived in Teton Valley established a farm with a view that is stunning! Long since donated to the National Park, “Mormon Row “is one of the top destinations in Grand Teton National Park. It’s particularly beloved at dawn – when the sunlight illuminates the towering, chiseled mountain range in golden light.
I attempted to photograph this scene the morning before, but weather conditions were abysmal: strong wind gusts and wispy clouds obscured the peaks. I only had two nights to spend here before having to travel east. Would the next morning workout better?
Indeed, it did! I arrived on location well before anyone else. A cup of coffee slapped me awake as I hopped back and forth to keep my fingers and toes warm. The wind was dead calm which meant the temperatures had dropped to freezing level. No clouds in sight. Yes, this would be excellent.
As more and more photographers arrived, I found myself focusing more and more on the scene. Because I had arrived first, everybody else that came stood around me – we didn’t want to get in each other’s composition. There seemed to be as many as 30 photographers, but all you could here was the sound of birds chirping as all of us were too busy enjoy the view.
That all changed as soon as sunlight began illuminated the 13,770-foot summit of Grand Teton, the uppermost peak in the photograph. Camera shutters furiously opened and closed. The click-clack sound of DSLR mirrors opening and closing echoed against the barn. All of us were busy capturing the moment. I didn’t stop photographing until the barn and foreground had been illuminated, but when I reviewed all my images, this one stood out the most.
A barn silhouetted against a mountain range carved by ice and sunlight.
This must be what heaven looks like.
