“Baker Beach Splash”

Location: Baker Beach, San Francisco (2018)

A wave breaks over the rocks at Baker Beach during a sunset on a late October’s evening.

The sun had already dipped below the horizon before the right ‘splash’ had occurred. This proved to be to my advantage, for in that moment the whole scene was bathed in a warm red afterglow, as if mimicking the color of the Golden Gate Bridge.

Setting up for this photograph, I sunk my tripod into the sand and steadied my camera. My shoes were resting farther up the beach next to several pieces of driftwood – well away from any wave. I was prepared to get wet.

As wave after wave washed ashore, my feet and legs felt the biting cold of the Pacific and my tripod slid under the shifting sand from retreating waves.

This was a challenging shot.
