“Urban Leviathan”

Location: Portland, Oregon (2021)

The USS Blueback rests alongside the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry pier on the Willamette River in Portland, Oregon.

A diesel-powered submarine, the last of its kind, the USS Blueback during her years in service prowled the deep sea to spy on the enemy and to ambush its prey. In February of 1994 the Blueback was towed to her present location.

This photograph was taken in February of 2021 – 27 years later. Gone are the exciting days cruising through the depths of the high seas. And yet, the stealth remains, even moored.

The setting was early morning – at the transition from nautical to civil twilight – under an overcast sky where the blue of twilight barely visible. Barely a whisper was the wind. Placid and still, the river.

Bundled up in several layers, I was determined to stay warm as I took my time to compose this shot. Camera and tripod rested on the floating pier next to the submarine and was positioned low. A foot or two above the surface. Making sure to align everything just the way I wanted: the fins of the submarine above the skyline; the columns of the bridge vertical and straight.
