“Upton Falls”

Location: Highway 130 “Little Nestucca River Road”, Oregon (2019)

The Little Nestucca River, full after a recent rain, is bisected as it flows down a series of drops and staircases before rejoining.

Upton Falls is well-known among the local fishermen who gather a little farther downstream to cast their lines.

I had only recently discovered the falls as I was driving down the road looking for spots along the river that were photogenic. (For years, I’ve been down this road as it is the fastest route to Pacific City from where I live. But never had I imagined this waterfall existed.)

There’s a fish run on one side of the fall and a broken ladder on the rock formation in the middle of the river. Information about the origins of the alterations is unclear.

Besides fishermen, and locals, the occasional whitewater kayaker looking for an adventure is familiar with the falls.

But I think this place should probably be a must stop for photographers, too.

The elongation of the falls with the curving of the river in the background gives this location a more 3-dimensional look not found at typical waterfalls with their sheer vertical drops.

Totally underrated.... The secret’s out now.
