“Proposal Rock (BW)”

Location: Neskowin, Oregon (2019)

Low tide at Neskowin reveals petrified stumps that draw the viewer’s eye toward Proposal Rock in the background.

These tree stumps, buried under tons of sand after the catastrophic earthquake of 1700, were revealed and discovered during the winter of 1997-1998.

(I was 7 years old at the time and did not join my parents and grandmother as they surveyed the stumps shortly after they were uncovered.)

Proposal Rock’s name is believed to have been named over a century ago when a couple first proposed on the rock.

This photograph as well as “Proposal Rock (2)” is taken during the winter and features a river not present during the drier summer months.

This river, you should know, is an unavoidable obstacle that must be crossed regardless of season but due to the increased water flow during the winter months, it is quite difficult to cross.

I came very close to falling down while crossing on my way back to my car. Had that happened, I doubt this photograph would have survived – as well as my camera.
