“Mt. Washington”
Location: Highway 20, Oregon (2020)
Virtually untouched in the winter, Mt. Washington and its fire scorched wilderness is seen from the viewpoint on Hwy 20 in eastern Oregon.
Like many who drive this stretch of highway, the Mt. Washington viewpoint is a perfect rest stop to stretch and take in the impressive sight of this spire-like and deeply chiseled stratovolcano.
(Reminds me of the Matterhorn.)
In the winter, when snow blankets the Cascades, Mt. Washington’s modest height of only 7,700ft appears twice that amount as its white capped frame dominates the surrounding wilderness.
Arriving here on a clear morning, I witnessed sunrise during which the peak turned alpine glow pink and orange.
(The photographs of that moment were nice but not enough for me to pack my camera and continue my drive.)
As I watched the light sweep across the land, the photograph you see started to take shape.
With the sun’s light a harsh white, I converted this digital photograph into black and white in order to emphasize the power and majesty of this Matterhorn like mountain.
