”Morning Worship”

Location: Laurance Lake Road, Oregon (2020)

From the valley of Eliot Creek, sunrise strikes the eastern slope of Mt. Hood and Eliot Glacier on a late October sunrise in 2020.

I had come to this location after seeing its photographic potential a year ago when I explored the area, searching for fall colors. At that time, the creek had a nice s-curve that was visible from the ridge of rocks. But a year later, its course had changed – the snowmelt from spring had turned the creek into a raging river that changed the composition.

With the creek now hidden from sight, the trees that filled the pebble and boulder strewn valley floor became the foreground focus. Like the faithful heralding the beginning of a new day, the dead stumps starkly contrast with the green mid-ground that separates them from the glaciated volcano.
