“Moonstruck”

Location: Broken Top Loop, Bend, Oregon (2021)

A full moon rises above Ball Butte near Broken Top in the Three Sisters Wilderness of central Oregon.

Camping underneath a full moon is like camping under a streetlamp. The thin fabric of the tent does little to block the light. You wake up during the middle of the night thinking it’s already dawn before checking your phone and realizing it’s only 2AM.

Our location for the night put us in an alpine meadow near a stream fed from snowmelt - the moonlight reflected in the water. The tent illuminated from within using a green light.

Part of a series of photographs taken on the 25-mile Broken Top Loop in mid-July, this was our one and only opportunity to photograph at night. The next day, smoke filtered in and turned the sky opaque.
