“Mayday”

Location: Clatsop Spit, Oregon (2020)

The 1906 shipwreck of the ‘Peter Iredale’ rests in the shallow tide of the frigid Pacific Ocean during blue hour on a November morning.

Artistic interpretation and the right conditions produced this mysterious and chilling photograph of the ‘Peter Iredale’ shipwreck.

Using a surfing wetsuit that covered the lower half of my body, I waded in the surf. My neoprene boots filled with the cold Pacific water but warmed as I anchored my tripod to the sandy shore. The tide was marching its way in, reaching high tide at sunrise. It was blue hour, the period right before golden hour, when the light produces tones of blue.

Shipwrecks, by their nature, are mysterious and spooky. Rarely are they so accessible. Through careful planning, as well as technical skill using Photoshop, I was able to create a photograph that I think imbues that sense of folklore that one associates with a shipwreck.

While the captain and crew of the ‘Peter Iredale’ made it out with their lives, many more ships have sunk, and lives lost, in this stretch of the Pacific Ocean than in any other location.

Known as ‘The Graveyard of The Pacific’, many captains have sent out a “Mayday”.
