“Broken Palace (1)”
Location: Broken Top Loop, Bend, Oregon (2021)
A nearly 180-degree view from the ridgeline connecting Broken Hand and Broken Top featuring the volcanoes in the central Cascades of Oregon.
Arguably the best view of the entire 25-mile Broken Top Loop is from the ridgeline that connects the acrophobia inducing climb around Broken Hand to the jaw-dropping Bend Glacier Overlook. Standing at an elevation of about 8,000 feet, you can see for hundreds of miles to the north and south from Washington State’s Mt. Adams to the California border. Due west, the snow-capped Three Sisters stratovolcanoes that make up the central Cascades are tantalizingly close. Look east and you’ll see Oregon’s high desert stretching out as far as the eye can see until it fades into a blue haze.
Beneath your feet, as you walk around the ridgeline, are millions of broken pieces of rock. They clank and sing as your boots scuffle over them. Resembling shattered earthenware, their grayish red coloration is a reminder of a violent volcanic past that formed the area over millions of years.
You feel as if you’re standing in a broken palace home to the gods of fire and ice.
