“Breaking Rocks”
Location: Cape Kiwanda, Oregon (2019)
The Pacific Ocean crashes against rocks along the northwestern edge of Cape Kiwanda.
These rocks are made of sandstone.
Their destiny is at the mercy of the tides and the constant pounding from the ocean.
What was once a sandstone arch is now just a pile of boulders. Someday, they, too, will be broken further. Their final form, grains of sand.
During low tide, believe it or not, the ocean retreats far enough that it’s out of sight. And during one of those low tides, I photographed “Forbidden Way”.
But in this photo, I was fortunate enough to plan my timing accordingly: the sun was directly overhead this narrow channel – a moment that only occurs around the summer solstice.
