“Thor’s Well”

Location: Cape Perpetua, Oregon (2018)

Water spills down into a hole known as Thor’s Well during the high tide of an autumn morning along the Oregon coast.

This photograph was captured before sunrise when atmospheric conditions were clear. (The pastel like colors along the horizon form opposite to the sun either 20-30 minutes before a sunrise or 20-30 minutes after a sunset.)

In order to photograph Thor’s Well you have to have the right conditions in order for the waves to crash high enough to spill into the hole.

This can be VERY dangerous.

While photographing, a wave, larger than the others, smashed into the rocky edge – you can see this edge in the photograph (where rock meets ocean).

That wave’s spray was big enough to simulate a downpour!

This made for a very challenging photograph. I had to be ready to protect my camera from a rogue wave and then make sure my camera’s lens was clean from any spray.
