“Territorial Dance”

Location: Oregon Coast (2019)

Seagulls jockey for territory and food during the late afternoon along the Oregon Coast.

There were hundreds of them – maybe thousands.

I was walking along the shoreline just north of Cape Kiwanda, looking for compositions with my camera, when I noticed all these seagulls gathered together in what appeared to be a great feeding along the shoreline.

They were so animated. An increased aggression amongst the gulls was beginning. Their focus was on anything but me.

This allowed me to approach closer and to observe their behavior more intimately.

As the frenzy gathered momentum, a particularly aggressive bird successfully intimidated another with his territorial display.
