“Dragon’s Tail”

Location: Cape Kiwanda, Oregon. (2019)

A wave recedes off the backside of Cape Kiwanda during a colorful sunrise.

This shot like the other two in the “Dragon’s Tail” series* were taken in a dangerous location on Cape Kiwanda. (WARNING: While not prohibited by law, venturing further out onto Cape Kiwanda is discouraged by the state, and is dangerous.)

Timing was critical for this shot: a wave to wash up on the cape while the clouds were illuminated by the sunrise.

Long moments would pass before a swell was strong enough to push up and onto the cape.

As I waited for the right moment, I imagined what I saw before me to be a dragon’s tail partially submerged under the ocean – the tip of the tail being Haystack Rock in the distance.

Wild and dangerous, the dragon takes no prisoners.
