“The Watchman”

Location: Zion National Park, Utah (2018)

Storm clouds swirl over The Watchman of Zion National Park.

I was overcome by the beauty that beheld my eyes. The sunlight breaking through storm clouds that had pummeled the landscape hours earlier with a barrage of water, was striking The Watchman – a peak that looks like Utah’s sandstone version of Hawaii’s Diamond Head.

This sunbreak happened while I was in the parking lot of the Zion Human History Museum where I had left my car. I was ready to drive back to my hotel – it was evening time and I had put in a full day of photography since sunrise.

But the beauty of the moment rejuvenated me and spurred me into fast action.

I found a location near my car that required me to hike along a trail adjacent to Opal Creek. Couldn’t have been more than five-hundred feet away. But required me to hop over the creek.

This distance proved to be a hurdle that I had to overcome at a sprint when my camera ran out of battery shortly after setting up everything.

Leaving my tripod and camera where they were, I sprinted back to my car. More worried about missing the moment or spraining an ankle at Opal Creek than anything happening to my camera.

When nature puts on a show, it’s as permanent as a snowman in the sun. Such energy and grandeur in the sky above The Watchman doesn’t occur every evening.

Only through dumb luck was I able to capture this photograph without breaking a leg before the moment disappeared.

It was a close call.

A lesson I should have learned just days earlier when I was in Bryce Canyon National Park. (See, “Thor’s Hammer”)
