“Stanley Lake”

Location: Stanley Lake, Idaho (2018)

Sunrise at Stanley Lake casts an orange glow on McGown Peak in the Sawtooth Range of Idaho.

Access to the lakeside for this photograph was from my campsite.

When I came to the lake, almost every campsite was taken. There were some much farther to the left of this photograph, but they were only accessible with a vehicle that had high clearance due to a bunch of standing water.

With sunset approaching quickly, I was running out of options.

After speaking with the campsite host about my road trip and my desire to photograph the lake, the host, a kind woman, offered me the spot next to her trailer that is available for camp host guests.

She said this lake was well known for its beauty at sunrise. She even went on to say how a photographer had even spent a whole week next to the campsite I had to photograph the sunrise.

It went without saying, that I was in good spirits after my good fortune of securing that campsite.

Sleeping as well as a child on Christmas Eve, I eagerly woke up well before sunrise.

It felt good to be alive that morning. There was a lot of excitement and anticipation.

The lake’s reflection remained calm and still as the sunlight began to illuminate the tops of the peaks in a pinkish glow known as alpine glow.

I totally understood why someone would spend a week here.
