“Palouse Falls (2)”
Location: Palouse Falls State Park, Washington (2019)
The Palouse River, gorged from spring snowmelt and recent rains, plunges nearly 200 feet into a churning bowl of foam and froth.
The volume of water cascading over the basaltic cliff is heavily reliant on snowmelt and becomes just a trickle during the late summer and early fall.
Taken in late May, the green foliage and color along the cliff captures a desert scene that belies its usual dryness.
I had come in the high hopes of a spectacular sunset with loads of color in the sky. But was deterred when I discovered the fencing and park staff preventing me from getting to the location that I’d seen online.
These limitations all came together to guide me to this photograph.
Protected by a fence, I captured a photograph that I hope demonstrates the power and majesty of this waterfall.
Water churning and flowing and frothing combined with the remoteness of the location produced an opportunity to relieve stress.
[Photographed during the same visit as “Palouse Falls (1)”]
