“Moonlight Double Arch”

Location: Arches National Park, Utah (2019)

Double Arch in Arches National Park is illuminated under the full moon.

Prior to taking this photograph at night, I had come to this location about 6 hours earlier for sunset – my original intention for being here.

Sometimes things are planned out fully in advanced and other times, I prefer to show up to a location with a kernel of an idea and then see where that idea takes me.

Sunset didn’t go well, but it allowed me to find the composition I wanted for the photograph you see.

Double Arch is a well-known arch in the park and one of the more accessible – requiring less than a ¼ mile hike from the parking lot. This means there can be quite a few people there. And sunset was no exception!  

Except there wasn’t anyone around at night! This absolutely surprised me. For if you look around online for photographs of Double Arch, you will quickly see photographs taken at night.

Using the light from the full moon to my advantage, I waited, as the moon slowly rose, until the moonlight revealed the arch.

There was freedom to be at peace as I witnessed the movement of light.
