“House of The Sun”

Location: Haleakala National Park, Maui (2020)

Clouds drift across the crater floor of Haleakala during an afternoon in January.

The wind was incredibly powerful as I was forced to use a modified three-point stance to stabilize myself as I leaned my body into the guardrail that overlooked the crater.

(Gusts as strong as 40MPH would surge up the crater walls and blast me with cold air.)

All my layers were on:

• Two hats,
• balaclava,
• a windbreaker,
• fleece jacket,
• a vest,
• long sleeved shirt,
• long underwear under hiking pants, and
• leather boots that contained my feet snuggled in thick wool socks.

And I wasn’t alone for I was near the visitor center and parking lot.

Throughout my shoot, my composition was copied by several Chinese tourists who took the opportunity to stand uncomfortably close to me as they snapped pictures on their phones.

(I continued to photograph, waiting for the fog to move. Trying to focus.)

As I observed the fog drift across the scene, I took a series of photos and chose the one that provide the essence of what I was trying to capture:
