“Garden of The Gods”

Location: Garden of The Gods National Natural Landmark, Colorado (2019)

Slabs of orange sandstone sharply rise among a mosaic of green. The sky can’t decide if it wants to be clear or cloudy on this mid-spring afternoon. Boardwalks built to meander through the sandstone and vegetation are a vehicle for tourists to feel small as they walk among giants.

This is the Garden of The Gods.

But what you can’t see are all the cars parked around me and the bicycle tours and all the other tourists taking pictures. I couldn’t believe how busy it was here!

On my way from Amarillo, Texas where I photographed “The Lighthouse” the previous evening, I arrived here during mid-week in mid-May. Couldn’t have been more surprised by the number of people.

There’s one road that leads through the park and its single lane. My first pass was for scouting out a location and the second pass was to find parking. Only on my third try was I able to get parking spot near where I took this photograph – all total that was about 30 minutes of driving around!

However, photography is magical in the sense that even though there were a lot of people, the camera can create a photograph in a fraction of a second and focus your attention on what everybody was there for – enjoying the nature and grandeur of Garden of The Gods.
