“Cold Blast”
Location: Summit of Mt. St. Helens, Washington (2020)
Looking north from the crater rim of Mt. St. Helens, a vast expanse of volcanic rock and snow lead to Mt. Rainier whose summit is blocked by a layer of swirling clouds.
The cold was almost unbearable. Strengthen by a breeze from the north, it stung and bit at any exposed flesh.
My fingers moved with the speed of a sleeping cheetah.
The smoldering lava dome at the bottom left of the photograph looked like a spa from where I was.
(No, can’t go there. Imminent death.)
Instead, I had a pair of mittens I would shove my hands into as soon as I got my camera gear set up.
As I stood there waiting for sunrise, I turned around and looked back at the route I had used to summit only 20 minutes ago. (The ascent took about 6 hours.)
