“Buffalo Eddy”

Location: Buffalo Eddy Nez Perce National Historic Park, Asotin, Washington (2019)

As the sky begins to darken in anticipating release, the swollen river flows through a desolate desert landscape made verdant by recent rains while a lone hut shows the only signs of civilization.

That hut across the river really caught my eye.

Using a very long camera exposure, the swirls in the river’s current blends and contorts into silky patterns that help enhance the building’s story of isolation.

What is it used for? Who, if anyone, lives there?

The movement of the clouds with their streaked pattern help showcase the passage of time and suggest the hut as a sort of permanent home for a weary traveler or a place where one can find comfort and stability despite the peaks and valleys of life.

The river is the Snake and this photograph was taken from the Washington side where there are petroglyphs nearby inscribed by the Nez Perce Indians of yesteryear.
