“Before Sunrise”

Location: Steptoe Butte, Colfax, Washington (2021)

Looking due east from Steptoe Butte, the approaching sunrise illuminates the clouds and reveals the rolling farmland of the Palouse.

Sometimes the light and conditions just before sunrise and just after sunset are the best. The clouds can be a kaleidoscope of colors that glow for only a few minutes – like a preview of coming attractions or an encore to a brilliant performance. Except in this case, there was to be no show beyond what was captured here.

When sunrise did in fact arrive, the sun was blotted out by the same clouds that were a brilliant orange just a few moments prior, and the sky became awash in a pale blue white.
