“White River Falls”

Location: Maupin, Oregon (2021)

The White River full of snowmelt and recent rains crashes unrestrained over basalt cliffs on an overcast spring day.

This location is in the rain shadow of Mt. Hood. As such its volume changes drastically throughout the year. Once the spring snowmelt is over, the water level drops precipitously and the resulting falls in the back of the photograph dry up.

Visiting in late May, I timed my visit during overcast conditions to help show off the jagged basalt as the waterfalls took center stage in a photograph that, to me, shows the power and ruggedness of this desert oasis.
