“Shards of Silence”

Location: Smith Rocks State Park, Oregon (2019)

Dawn approaches Smith Rocks State Park in central Oregon on a clear summer morning.

Mornings at Smith Rocks are always so peaceful. The lack of dense forest makes for quiet mornings while the meandering Crooked River bubbles quietly.

Unlike the winter when Canadian Geese come down to spend the winter, the air in the summer as with this morning was free from their squawk.

Taken prior to sunrise when the light was soft and the sky still a purple blue, the crisp cool air, combined with the sweet smell of junipers, created an atmosphere of silence punctuated visually by the sheer cliffs of tuff and basalt rock that comprise the park.

This is the quintessentially classic viewpoint of park. I was not alone in photographing this morning.
