“Sanctuary”

Location: Tierra Del Mar, Oregon (2020)

Included within Oregon Islands National Wildlife Refuge, Haystack Rock of Pacific City provides essential breeding and resting habitat for seabirds and marine mammals.

The seabirds are easy to spot in the evening as day transitions to night. The rock erupts with thousands of them. Their behavior dictated by nature and not the approach of man.

I wondered, as I most often do when looking at the birds over Haystack Rock, what the rock it would be like to be on top of the rock. Would the birds attack? Would there even be a spot to stand? How much farther could I see out to sea than at sea level?

Of course those questions will only be questions and never answers for this rock, this haystack rock, Chief Kiwanda, is a sanctuary.
