Location: Cannon Beach, Oregon (2021)

Haystack Rock is illuminated during golden hour at low tide on a spring morning in June.

Nearing the summer solstice, the morning sun illuminates the iconic northwestern face of Cannon Beach’s Haystack Rock.

Due to the flatness of Cannon Beach, low tide gives the sand a mirror like finish that mimics the reflectivity of a calm lake. As such, Haystack Rock almost seems to be surrounded on all sides by blue sky and clouds.

There was a flurry of activity near the rock as shorebirds began to hunt. They can be seen in gathered en masse on the top of the rock in the vegetation or flying overhead as they prepare to dive for a meal.

People, too, were beginning to stir as eager beachgoers were looking to explore the tidepools at the base of the rock during this beautiful spring morning.
