“Radiant Rock”

Location: Tierra Del Mar, Oregon (2019)

Haystack Rock off the coast of Pacific City is an angular black shape against a tapestry of color in this abstract photograph.

Photographed during the opposite time of day “Dream Tower”, the colors in this image were captured during a sunset on a clear, cool, and calm evening.

Haystack Rock appears as a solid dark object whose angular shape powerfully projects skyward.

This “power” is imagined as the orange and red glow from the sunset, as it dissipates to a pale sky blue near the top of the photograph.

I find it gives the rock a sort of mystical status. A symbol of natural power. Supernatural even.

(From what I understand, Native Americans in the area were the Kiwanda or Kiawanda Indians and Haystack Rock was known as Chief Kiawanda to them.)

Perhaps they, too, associated mystic and power with the rock after witnessing a similar sunset.
