“Peter Iredale Sunrise”

Location: Clatsop Spit, Oregon (2020)

High tide licks the rusted bow of the ‘Peter Iredale’ shipwreck as the sun bathes the overcast morning in vibrant hues of purple.

Standing in a foot of bone chilling Pacific Ocean, I was comforted by the wetsuit I was wearing. Calculating when the high tide would occur, this was actually my first time at this location – the shipwreck of the ‘Peter Iredale’.

Abandon on Clatsop spit in 1906, the ‘Peter Iredale’ has rested on this strip of beach ever since. Nobody perished in the incident and due to the nature of the wreck, the tide has never been able to wrestle the ship free. And so, she remains.

Careful planning brought me here for the high tide. But the weather is always somewhat unpredictable. Expecting a completely overcast morning, I was astonished at my fortune when as sunlight approach, the clouds began to illuminate in hues of vibrant purple.

This is photograph, like the captain and crew of the ‘Peter Iredale’, is an instance where planning, determination, and a little fortunate come together.
