“Kings Grade”
Location: Newberg, Oregon (2021)
In the heart of Oregon wine country between Newberg and Gaston, fog lifts during an early autumn morning along Ribbon Ridge.
The name of the photograph, “Kings Grade” comes from the location from where it was captured. Kings Grade is a steep road that climbs Chehalem Mountain overlooking the wineries of Ribbon Ridge. When I was in high school a friend of mine got his car stuck in a ditch on Kings Grade – back when the road was still gravel.
Like my friend, Kings Grade had an unexpected twist for me. But with the road long since paved, my surprise was fortuitous.
I awoke to find clear skies; the kind of conditions I had expected for a photograph I had had in mind. But when I arrived at the shoulder pullout at the top of Kings Grade, the vineyards were completely socked in with fog. Dismayed, I was about to head back home when the fog started to suddenly lift.
With almost no time to prepare, I hastily setup my camera and tripod to snap this brief moment of fog and fall colors.
(Eminent Domaine is the winery along Ribbon Ridge and Jacheter Vineyards is the low-lying vineyard before the tree line.)
