“Cascading Light (2)”
Location: Cape Kiwanda, Oregon (2019)
Sunlight begins to illuminate Cape Kiwanda and Haystack Rock at Pacific City, Oregon.
The light was spectacular.
It was winter, and the sun was rising from the southeast.
This angle of light first illuminated the tip of Haystack Rock and began washing down its front. Illuminating more and more with each passing second.
Next, and soon after the Haystack Rock started receiving light, Cape Kiwanda’s western leading edge became infused in golden sunlight.
As the sun began to rise higher and higher, more and more of the cape became revealed.
This light was almost moving left to right instead of top to bottom. The mountains along the coast range were directing the light.
Because of this, the shape of the light helps to accentuate the layers in the cape. (As you can see, there are not only different colors, but the cape’s depth varies in this photograph.)
Like tiers in a waterfall, the light isn’t the same intensity throughout the landscape.
