“Cascading Light”
Location: Smith Rocks State Park, Oregon (2020)
A curtain of orange sunlight sweeps down the rock face at Smith Rocks State Park during a winter’s morning.
From my research, I’d say only 3 maybe 4 months of the year the sun rises at a low enough latitude that it shines unobstructed.
On the morning of this photograph I witnessed the sunlight cascading slowly down the rock as more and more of the scene illuminated.
It was like watching time itself unfold. A natural sundial.
The air was crisp and nipped at my face and hands as I timed my photograph to catch the light right when it reached the lowest notch.
Canadian geese squawked as they chased each other through the canyon.
All that’s missing is some snow! (For another time.)
