“Cape Kiwanda (BW)”

Location: Cape Kiwanda, Oregon (2020)

It was the day before the beach would open to the general public during early June of 2020 – when COVID-19 restrictions were in place.

Even though it was June, the number of footprints in the sand were a similar amount as one would find during the winter months – very much the off season on the Oregon coast.

But I was racing against time. There were more people at the beach this evening than I had expected.

After setting up my tripod and camera, I waited (patiently?) for people to move out of frame. This was agonizing because there were clouds along the horizon and in the sky. The sun would only remain visible for a short period – its golden rays making the sandstone glow with warmth.

Fortunately, with maybe only a New York minute to spare, I had an opportunity to take a series of photographs – each one people free but different in the timing of the waves. And then the sun disappeared behind a bank of clouds lining the horizon – the moment forever gone.

It’s moments like those when photographing when all the “elements” come together. And like this time as with most times, that perfect moment is only seconds long.

The combination of clouds in the sky and the less than normal number of footprints for this time of the year makes this a rare photograph.
