“Cape Kiwanda (2)”

Location: Cape Kiwanda, Oregon (2019)

A minus tide at Cape Kiwanda with dory boats and an overcast sky.

If you look at this photograph carefully, you’ll see that the ocean level is lower than usual – notice the bathtub ring around Haystack Rock (Chief Kiwanda). Also, too, the black sandstone of the cape where mussels and mollusks have propagated

This unusual coloration was enhanced by the overcast sky which, by blocking out the sun, revealed a landscape that’s easy to see. Sunglasses weren’t needed today!

Overcast skies can be quite common off the Oregon coast during the summer when a marine layer forms as a result of much warmer temperatures inland. (San Francisco Bay experiences a similar phenomenon.)

There were a lot of dory boat fishermen out. I don’t know the season, and I’ve tried finding out the answer online, but I’ll stop before showing any more of my ignorance about fishing. lol

Regardless, low tide is a great opportunity to launch a dory boat. (The waves were calm and despite the ominous looking sky, the weather was great. )

Photographed early in the morning, there weren’t a lot of beach goers yet.

A great morning to get outside for both fishermen and photographer.
