“Anchor Rock (2)”
Location: Cape Kiwanda, Oregon (2021)
The sandstone cliffs of Cape Kiwanda illuminate in the glow of blue hour light as sunrise approaches on a winter morning along the Oregon coast during high tide.
Believe it or not, but when the tide is exceptionally low, it’s possible to stand underneath the arched rock in this photograph. But those conditions were not for this morning, nor what I had in mind when I rose out of bed when it was still dark.
To get to where I’m standing, I walked along the shoreline at Pacific City and up the large sand dune that crests to the left-hand side of the photograph – where trees are. It was as dark as when I had awoken, which meant I needed a headlamp, but the stars were visible and brilliant.
As I huffed and puffed up the sand dune, I stopped to take in my surroundings and admire the twinkling lights that made up the heavens. These brilliant points of light are more easily seen along the Oregon coast thanks to the largely rural population. No dominating city light pollution to obscure the night sky, but this was the early morning, and the glow of approaching sunrise was starting to turn off the stars to the east.
I continued to make my way to the cliff edge where I would eventually set up my tripod and camera to capture the photograph you see. Having made it to the top of the dune, I circled down and around along the edge. The soft sand of the dune transitioned to the firm sandstone that was moist from recent rains. I slipped and fell on my side a few times as I walked down an angled section that curved away from the cliff’s edge. A good reminder not to approach too close to the edge.
