“Alpine Heaven”

Location: Broken Top Loop, Bend, Oregon (2021)

I was with the campers – it was our first night on the Broken Top Loop, a 2-night/3-day backpacking trip covering a total distance of 25 miles through subalpine and alpine wilderness in the Central Oregon Cascades.

Having brought my DSLR, I was determined to take photographs whenever inspiration struck. This put me behind everyone else. Prior to reaching our camp for the night, we had traveled through what was argued to be the most scenic section of the loop – Broken Hand, Bend Glacier Overlook, and No Name Lake. The latter two, I stopped to take pictures of while the rest of the group marched forward.

When I got with eyeshot of the tents, I was met immediately with the heavenly scene in this photograph. Two different glacial fed streams intertwining amongst lush vegetation containing a multitude of wildflowers that led the eye down to where my friends had pitched their tents. Behind them, the jagged peak of Ball Butte and conical shape of Mt. Bachelor creating a natural skyline that seemed to protect us from the distant wildfire smoke – a white impenetrable haze hundreds of miles away.

An alpine heaven.
