“Looking Glass”

Location: Oregon Coast (2019)

A seagull is caught cleaning himself on a tide swept beach on the Oregon Coast.

Seagulls, as you probably know, are one of those seabirds who have become accustomed to humans.

They’ll gravitate toward you if you’ve got food for them and will wait to fly off until you’re just a few feet away.

But in order to capture them expressing their natural behavior, you’ve got to be far enough away for them to feel comfortable yet close enough to be able capture them on camera.

This young adult was busy cleaning himself (Herself? I don’t know). I caught him in the act of looking at his self-image as he was preening his feathers with his bill. (Checking himself out for a special gull perhaps? *wink *wink)

In real time, he ruffled his feathers, but in the moment of a fast shutter speed, it’s as if the seagull is looking at himself.

Something so human like.
