“Chehalem Harvest”

Location: Warden Hill Road, Newberg, Oregon (2021)

Farmers work to bale up an early harvest of hay at the foothills of Chehalem Mountain in the countryside of Newberg, Oregon in early July.

Due to a record-shattering heatwave at the end of June, the hay was ready to bale just days after the Fourth of July. Each bale a symbol of the rich agricultural history of the valley. The golden color contrasting nicely with the vibrant green of the vineyards.

In this photograph, you can see a baling operation is underway. The red tractor raking the hay in preparation for the green tractor to bale it all up – in fact a bale is about to drop down from the back of the baler. Do you see it?

I had come upon this scene after scouting it out days prior after photographing “Kuene Road Barn”. At that time, the hay in this field was still in the process of curing. When I returned to photograph two afternoons later, I had no idea I would witness a hay baling operation. The timing was serendipitous.
