“Chehalem Fall”

Location: Newberg, Oregon (2019)

“Golden hour” in the heart of wine country can produce some rich colors during the peak of autumn. Seen here are the vineyards for Chehalem Winery and Rex Hill Vineyards.

It’s got to be said: photographing Oregon wine country is very limited and difficult. Not many photographers have access.

Those that do either get lucky and find a public access point – like I did in this image – or ask for permission from the winery to walk the grounds and take pictures.

The difficulty is compounded when trying to find interesting compositions.

Hills and criss-crossing vineyards are interesting since they give depth to an image,
but fencing and buildings can either add or detract.
Not every vineyard is artistically pleasing.

Lastly, a location also needs to have the right light.
Facing west, this area was bathed in the rich golden glow of a setting sun.
Enhancing the autumn colors that were spectacular this year.
