“Rising Phoenix”

Location: Cape Kiwanda, Oregon. (2019)

Morning sunlight shines on the side of a jagged sandstone rock at Cape Kiwanda, Oregon.

Boulders strew the area – evidence of what was once an arch that covered the sky. The sandstone of Cape Kiwanda is always changing.

This spot is either completely exposed or covered in water depending on the tide. (I’ve photographed “Breaking Rocks” while standing on top of the boulders to the right of the photograph.)

Sand is constantly being pushed and pulled and moved around by the ocean. This area never looks exactly the same from day-to-day.

While the early morning light illuminated the sandstone, a silhouette appeared in my imagination.

The rocks being partly buried created the illusion in my mind of a Phoenix rising from ashes.
