“Anchor Rock”
Location: Cape Kiwanda, Oregon (2019)
Waves flow and churn through sandstone arches in the early morning light along the Oregon coast.
I remember this morning as if it had been yesterday: clear and cold with me panting out of breath.
In order to reach this location, I had to charge up and over a large sand dune at the southern edge of the cape.
As I caught my breath, I peered over the edge at the scene in this image:
The tide was coming in and the waves would occasionally sweep over the rocks down below.
The sandstone cape, whose jagged edges formed an arch over the frothing ocean were connected to a larger sandstone formation whose fractured sides were chiseled by wind and sea.
I imagined what I saw as resembling a ship’s anchor.
