“Sunbreak Barn”

Location: Chambers, Washington (2021)

A freshly painted red barn catches the morning sunlight in the rolling farmland of the Palouse.

With clouds all around, I wondered if there would be an opportunity to photograph this barn. It was sunrise and I patiently waited for the sun to poke through.

I was standing along the side of the road. Cars and semi-trailers whizzed nearby, the wind from them stimulating the hair on the back of my neck.

This year the hills were not yet green. It had been a record-breaking dry spring. But it’s the contrast between the clouds and the barn, the vegetation and the hillside that makes the photograph work for me.
